1. Burton's Sugar Farm, home of Catfish in the Barn, Michigan City, MS
This is a working sorghum farm that has a huge barn on its property that they open up every Friday and Saturday nights for dinner. They are closed for the winter, but this Friday is their opening weekend for the spring, and they will remain open until the end of October. This is definately a destination restaurant. It is about an hour drive from Memphis, but is totally worth it. They serve buffet style a wonderful mixture of foods. They obviously have catfish and all that goes along with that, but they also serve chicken n dressing, 5 or 6 vegetables such as turnip greens, black eyed peas, carrots, mashed potatoes, okra, just to name a few. They also serve up fresh sliced tomatoes, fresh cucumber and onion salad, and homemade pickles. Don't miss the homemade ice cream straight from the maker along with a cake of your choice. Of course, there is sweet tea and lemonade to round out the meal. I will warn you that there is no air conditioning since it is an open barn, but you won't even miss it. The kids have a blast because right out the open doors of the barn, there is huge areas to run around and play. They have crocket and corn hole out for you to enjoy as well. There is also a huge Noah's Ark to play in and swings. It is just nice to have a fun weekend night where you just slow down and enjoy the outdoors and great food. If you go, you will probably see us there since we visit almost every weekend if not every other until it closes in October. 2. Shelby Farms new Playground
I was so excited to take the boys last week to the new playground in Shelby Farms. It really has something for almost any age child. The county really did a great job at targeting a large range of ages. There are 4 "nests" to choose from that each have different activities to enjoy. There is a sand area that has a large tube slide along with a water feature to play in with your hands. The next nest is in a steep incline that has several slides for little ones and fun ways to climb back up to the top. The 3rd nest is all sorts of swings, and the final nest is a huge climbing net that you can climb from tree to tree (even adults would enjoy this). I like that you can monitor your child fairly well by keeping them within one nest at a time. We went during the week, so it was mostly smaller children and wasn't too crazy. I will say, I would probably not do this on a weekend or summer day when kids are out of school.
