Try It Tuesday

1. Southern Hands Family Dining - serving the best food this side of heaven!

Southern Hands is one of our weekly staples. They have been opened almost 2 years, and they have already opened 3 locations due to their popularity. Baxter discovered this restaurant through his work and had to take us. They have a location in Collierville, right off of 385, another one on Winchester in the parking lot of the Hickory Ridge Mall, and one in Cordova. They have several items that we love to eat. Their baked spaghetti is the best I have ever had, and it comes with 2 vegetables which I usually get cabbage and black-eyed peas. Baxter loves the fried chicken as well as the baked chicken. Their other great veggies include turnip greens, boiled okra, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, rice, macaroni and cheese and green beans. Also, their cornbread is to die for; it is almost worth going there just for it. It has the perfect amount of sweetness. It is a great place to go and get good home cooking without heating up your own kitchen!

2. Rutabagas

Rutabagas are one of our favorite vegetable side dishes at the Goss household. It is a great alternative to potatoes as a starch-like item in your meal. They have several health benefits as well as tasting great. Rutabagas are loaded with phytochemicals such as, carotenoids, terpenes, flavonoids, coumarins, indoles, phenolic acids, and isothiocyanates. This means they are anti-oxidants, they prevent degenerative disease, protect vision, neutralize free radicals, and stimulate anti-cancer enzymes, to name a few benefits. Rutabagas are also beta carotene-rich. You peel the waxy skin off and then chop them. We usually stew them with some cinnamon and a little butter. They can also be glazed or steamed. They are naturally sweet, so they don't require a lot of additions. We actually cooked them tonight, and Fletcher especially loved them. Give them a try!

Yes, I am posting this during tornado and thunderstorm warnings, but what else are you going to do when nothing is on TV!

Thanks for the new veggie tip! Or I suppose it is a starch. Jon is refusing to eat veggies again, so I'm desperate for something new. He loves fruit, so I'm hoping the sweetness of these will work on him.

Hope y'all make it through the storm okay! We are technically under a watch right now, but nothing is really happening.

So good to hear from you Megan! We have survived so far, but it just keeps coming. Good luck on the veggie, Fletch loves them. They are almost like candy!
